Lloyds banking group closing accounts - cifas?

Hi everyone,

first post here and I know similar has been posted before but could not find the final outcome.

long sorry cut it short, I received a text message saying my accounts will be closed in 60 days. When I rang up they said for ordering too many replacement cards (I have but nothing too extreme). Anyway, I wondered would like be reported to cifas? The lady on the phone said she would highlight concerns to other banks.
I have requested a SAR for CIFAS and is currently blank.

my questions are:
1. if a Cifas marker was added when will it show?
2. How would banks highlight concerns to other banks?

Thank you

  • While I can't answer your questions, whatever your definition of "too extreme" may not be what the bank is.
For example, you may think one new card every 6 months isn't too extreme but for a bank, that may be very extreme.
Banks are scared these days.  Any customer that sticks out is potentially kicked out.

CIFAS marker will last 6 years. It will make impossible to get a bank account for that period.

I'm surprised a bank would text that to you. Far more likely to send a letter.

Are you sure it was genuine?

You don't get a CIFAS for ordering too many replacement cards.

    Do you keep losing them?

  • They text me to say account closing. I then called and they said that. I have now received a letter about closure.
I do understand that a cifas marker will last 6 years but I am not sure if this warrants a cifas marker. This is why I am trying to find out information about when will they get applied if they are going too?
I hadn’t reported a card lost for years, then since changing my work environment I have lost like 5 in 2 months which I guess is unlike me

Closure can just be for business reasons. What leads you to believe that a marker will be applied. Some customers just aren't worth the hassle to a business.
  • I’m just paranoid I think from googling lol. Also the letter - a recent risk assessment has highlighted concerns

There is no cifas category for "doesnt fit our preferred profile" so dont worry about that as long as there's no fraud or misuse of account (use as business account eg ebay etc etc).
CIFAS is for significant incidents, mainly around fraud, and if that was the case they would close immediately and not tell you why.

Whilst nobody apart from Lloyds will ever really know why they are closing your account, it could be that your change in working environment is reflected in the transactions of your account. You don't, by any chance, process business transactions through a personal account? This is against the T&Cs of most personal current accounts and is often a reason for why people lose their current accounts.

As to CIFAS: you can ask Lloyds whether they will give you a CIFAS marker, and if so, which one, and why.
