  • Asked my builder about a new boiler. The Gas Safe engineer he recommended only fitted Vaillant boilers and as he said at the time, it came with a seven year warranty so if there was a problem it would be him having to fix it anyway. Boiler was fine.

Agree with others, gas fitters have their preferences and others they wouldn't use. Much is down to preference and bias.

I have a 13 year old WB that has been neglecdted but still performed flawlessly.

All of those 3 should be fine but perhaps 1 make may have a model that is better suited to your needs than the other 2. Another brand worth looking at would be ATAG.

Which company makes reliable boilers these days?

I've heard that the quality and reliability of Vaillant boilers have dropped.

Is it worth paying the extra for Viessmann?
I have a Vaillant now which is due for replacement in the near future (over 15 years old). It has worked well for me so I will probably stick with Vaillant. I can't comment on the other 2.

Great service but why was the expansion vessel not checked on the last annual service visit ? Maybe your not paying for an annual service but another product.

Viessmann are ok, there all ok really. Its not just the boiler but how well its installed and the quality of the existing installation.
Historically their spares were hard to get in a hurry (depends on Uk location) and awfully expensive, Ok if you have viessmann warranty and they use their own factory trained service tech's.
There not a boiler i would let a jack of all boilers repairs/servicer touch or install. There ok thou, whisper quiet running.

AS already mentioned independent gas boiler installers are offered incentive schemes,   <3

    Baxi are reliable  <3

My last combi boiler was a Vaillant also, lasted 15 years and now I have a new Vaillant boiler. But I didn't have any choice as I'm in a council property and that's what they use where I live. When I spoke to the engineers who came to fit the new one they said that Vaillant was a good make, well respected. They had no reason to say that as they work for the council and are as independent as one could imagine, I guess. They don't receive any incentives.

They also showed me how to increase the pressure myself if it ever became necessary, as the system is different on the new version and it's always handy to know how to do that since it takes only seconds and keeps the system going until the next (mandatory) annual check.

It's good to know that if there is any problem at all with the boiler it will just automatically cut out and shut down. As the old one did, 'died' gracefully. . .  But then, that's probably true of all modern boilers.

  • The internal parts of all makes of boilers probably come from the same Chinese factory !!

Well not really, considering they'd only install what the council tells them to install.

    Good to hear.
Many councils, housing associations keep with the same manufacture as their in house or contracted in repairs.service install operatives are trained/experienced on that marque and they are supplied with first aid kits (massive box of new spares) for the vaillant boilers they install.
Keeping to one manufacture has its advantages  <3
Any warranty work (if any) is done by the inhouse or contracted company. No installer rewards  :(

Vaillant sustain is the contract boiler but other large installing companies get better discounts for other (bare-no frills) vaillant products.
