  • A US airline took one olive off its salads and saved a five figure sum per year, from memory.
  • A difference in 1 mm.

During the 1950's a person strolled into the Colgate base camp and reported that he had a plan to build deals by an astounding 40% however needed $100,000 for it. The chiefs, being cash disapproved saw him out.

For the following fourteen days, they spent thinking about all plans to expand their deals. Be that as it may, nothing approached the 40 % increment which was guaranteed. The person was called and the chiefs acknowledged his proposition. He gave them a Single paper which read Make the opening greater.

This way By changing the size of the opening from 4mm to 5mm, Colgate had the option to expand utilization, and eventually deals.

An amusing story @hamza369, and one similar to the "add 'and repeat'" to shampoo bottles however this is a tool to increase revenue rather than reduce costs unless machining a 5mm opening container was somehow cheaper... they are filled from the back and then sealed so can't see how it would.

A hospital drama I was watching last night: reducing the water pressure by 5% saved enough money to cover the cost of some life-saving and complex pro bono surgery.

    No idea if it's true.

It wasnt Casualty was it? If it was, then it wasnt  :D:smile:

One of the more controversial ones we had was to stop sending a second copy of the credit agreement for people paying their premiums by instalments. One sheet of paper and printing may not cost a lot but when you send millions each year plus about 10% of people both to send it back at which point you then have to pay staff to deal with the post and securely destroy it the amount adds up.

The challenge was selling it to our banking parent company who seemed to have forgotten that we'd never been fully compliant with the consumer credit act but our business forecasts were based on writing off bad debt and not going for aggressive enforcement let alone going to court to recover premiums.

    The Good Doctor, Sky Witness.

I know some hotels use aerated shower heads which are supposed to have the same effect.

I have heard this one before.  It is one of those sayings that seems to have stuck for some reason.  I have always thought that the saying could be read in one of two ways:

It saved a five figure sum
It lost the company a lot more than that.

    Take the the following scenario:

Say the salad normally had five olives. The number of olives had been chosen by the chef as just enough to make the salad look good.  Four made the salad look a bit sparse in the chef's opinion.  Customers' image of airline's food goes down very slightly.  What is the cost of that to the airline in the long-term?

Beware of bean counters, or in this case, olive counters.

Perhaps if Barclays Bank stopped sending me a statement through the post every month showing my investment earned 7 pence that month. they may save some money. An annual statement would be sufficient!

Less than 20 years ago my father was receiving a work related pension of £9 a month. The pension provider would send a letter through the post each month telling him they were going to pay the £9 into his bank account on X date and then send a second letter telling him they had done this after the event.

Seven pages of stuff from HSBC described as an annual statement of fees and interest, totalling £0. Ridiculous.
