RBS, HSBC and Santantader UK have all switched their debit cards from Visa to Mastercard. Would appear to be the higher fees that are the attraction. Correspondingly higher prices for consumers sadly.

Received similar email which also offered £20 off next purchase if default payment method is set to debit or non-Visa credit card.
It seems Amazon are sending out different emails to different customers. The one I received offered no explanation at all, just a statement of alleged fact.
So far, this has made me more negative about Amazon, but we'll see what happens.

Well I just cancelled my Amazon Prime, it was due to renew on 1 Dec.

Amazon is bullying Visa on this one...
Bullying? The idea of the financial mega-giant Visa being bullied is laughable.  🤣

It's more a case of the biter being bitten back.
Not that it matters much to mere mortals like us.... but Amazon's revenues are more than 15 times higher than Visa's.

You can call it a negotiation tactic if you prefer.

Revenue isnt really a good measure when you are considering a service -v- physical products - appreciate Amazon these days is a hybrid of services and goods. Amazon is still the bigger company on gross profit/income but the multiplier is halved.

Still a company making $24bn of revenue is big and ugly enough to deal with another multinational corporation slinging some mud in the press.

Thank you for trying to give me permission to do something I don't want to do. No one needs your permission to do anything.

Whatever it is, it isn't bullying. And Visa is far too big to be bullied. Perhaps you prefer to call it a "negotiating tactic", seeing you got it wrong when you first attempted to describe it.

It could be a negotiation tactic - or it could just be that Visa fees are higher than MasterCard and Amex and Amazon believe that most customers will change cards rather than ditch amazon.  More customers using lower fee cards = more profit.
A lot of customers will have more than one card, some considerably more, and if Amazon can push them towards using a card which has cheaper fees then it really has little reason not to do that.

Lots of people reading lots into this.

Perhaps Jeff was simply turned down for a Visa card and getting his own back:) :D:D
  • The best article written about this, and the reasons why it's happened, has been published today in "Head For Points":

Wonder if I change my payment method to my Visa card I'll be offered a financial incentive to change it again, come January?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

That's a possibility, as mentioned in the article from "Head For Points" I mentioned above, for when Amazon surely do another sweep of their accounts later.

Well I tried to actually get one of their Mastercards so I don't have to worry about my visa card.

And guess what I was turned down. Had no trouble with the visa card previously but New Day won't have anything to do with me..
