BT do offer broadband without telephony ( so no dialtone , no way to make or receive any calls including 999 ) the list price of this is (AFAIK) £5 per month cheaper than the same broadband package with telephony , although I have seen comments where the phone element can be negotiated  for £2 not £5.
The description of it as ‘no line rental’ is the issue , because there still is a line ( fibre or copper ) and it’s being ‘rented’ , it just has one service ( broadband ) delivered over it rather than two ( phone and broadband ) , so even if the package title is ‘No Line Rental’ , it’s still there, personally I think it’s clearer just to say ‘No Telephony’.
I don’t know why you would struggle to find this if you are a BT customer as it’s very prominent on their website.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines a Landline as a phone that is connected to the phone system by wires.

So from that, the assumption is that if you don't have a requirement for a phone connection (which the OP says he doesn't) then he doesn't need a landline.

What he has been quoted for includes line rental charges which is not the same as a Landline.

As the question was re landlines that's the route answered .
But i believe VM have a no landline /rental   broadband product , you would need to check and see of its cheaper or not .

My daughter has internet only from Virgin Media and pays more than me per month.
