Changing broadband provider

Hi there,

I have some problem of understanding the switching process and terms.

One year contract is ending with Shell Broadband on 16/12/2021.
I would like to change provider in order to get a good deal without paying cease charge or any other cancellation fee.
What is the right course of action?

Shall I get another deal and let switching providers complete on the same day when my previous contract ends, 16/12/2021?
The current contract is on my name. Can my partner sign up for a new deal - with the same provider, Shell Broadband - and still get the sign up deal?

Shall I let Shell Broadband know that I am leaving them or the next provider - in my case, the same provider - will notify them?
Shall I give 30 days cancellation notice to Shell Broadband?

Sorry if I misunderstand the switching process. I just want to make sure I won't be left without internet nor charged any extra fee.

Many thanks.

You sign up with new provider and they handle it all .
Partner  may or may not be able to sign up , but you would need to pay cancellation charges and lose phone number .

    Thank you for the comment.

    When should I sign up?
When should the new provider take over the line and start providing their services? Mind you, current contract ends on 16/12/2021.

I do not use landline, nor care about landline number.

There should be something in your contract about switching and any fees that might be due.
When I switched away from Shell, I signed up with my new supplier a couple of weeks before the Shell contract was due to expire and my switch went through a few days after the contract ended.
Do watch out for Shell trying to make a Cease Charge (they shouldn't) and asking you to return your router or be charged for it (they can and you should).

Yes, but not always, however if important to you assume it wll vanish and act accordingly., I think BT have scheme where you can pay a monthty fee to retain e mail

Time to set up a Gmail or Hotmail etc account

BT let you have that separate at a hefty charge . Last time i looked it was £7 plus per month ,
  • Even worse is if you were daft enough to use their cloud backup service that comes as a broadband freebie. Took me days to swap that data to another provider (and verify it).
