neighbours noisy plumbing

Can anyone tell me whether environmental health will step in regarding incredibly noisy plumbing from my neighbour.   The noise is astonishing!!  She had plumbing done to her bathroom i assume a few years back - drilling into adjoining wall.  Since that time, every time she runs her taps the noise is absolutely mind blowing!!!  It is pushing me to the edge of my tolerance level.   I have never spoken to her as she talks to nobody.....I dropped a note explaining the situation and how it was affecting me several months ago and she did not even acknowledge it.   I sent a follow up letter 2 weeks ago and absolutely nothing!.. she has merely stopped running her taps between 11.00pm and 1.00 am as she always did as she knows this could be classed as a statutory nuisance.   I believe she is fully aware there is a problem and by acknowledging the problem she would be expected to rectify it and is obviously not prepared to sped money rectifying the situation.   I heard absolutely nothing until she had this plumbing installed a few years ago.....

Would environmental health be prepared to actually come and listen to this incredible noise of which i can take no more.  Could i take legal action???  Could anybody tell me what my rights might be.  Nobody should have to tolerate this kind of violation of their home.  I have mentioned to her of health conditions that are exacerbated by stress...i have a stressful job working really long hours and would like some peace and quiet in my own home....it is everybodies right.  She owns her house and i rent and i think she assumes as such that she can do what the hell she likes.   I am close to moving home as i can take no more of the situation......

Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated.

i was grateful for the response when i came on here some time back...unlike people like yourself who probably come on here ten times a day, going over peoples past posts and making no more than unhelpful remarks.  There may have been somebody on this occasion reading who would know where i stand legally, etc......

i dont need to turn a major issue in my life into another one by coming on here.....

You could but try environmental health, they are the ones who will tell you yes or no.  In fairness to naf’s reply you do say you are close to moving, it may be the best option for you.

Sorry if I was scathing but sometimes moving is really the best option . Those who own their own homes or at the start of their rental agreement don't really have such options

    Two things

keep a diary of dates and times you’re woken up

secondly, any idea why the neighbour might be running taps in the middle of the night?

I’ve always lived in terraced houses so I’m in the habit of not flushing between midnight and 6am and washing my hands in cold water then too.

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

Interestingly I had this in a flat which came on unexpectedly
I simply turned the external stopcock down a bit and the issue vanished
If you can access hers perhaps try it
I suspect the water pressure had been increased

Maybe recommend a good doctor?  :open_mouth:
  • thank you for your replies.  I contacted shelter yesterday as not sure what avenue to take regarding this.  They were very helpful and have responded with links, contacts and legal routes i can take.
unfortunately you cannot give anybody any manners or respect for others which is clearly what this neighbour is lacking.
