Our children are in their 30s and 40s.
(one of the children has a diagnoses of autism if that makes any difference)

Recommendation perhaps. Family law solicitors specialise as such.1

What do they specialise in that would make my partner choose a family solicitor over a different type of solicitor?0

The cost. Another town might be cheaper.1

Maybe I should have mentioned my partner wants a divorce?0

Might depend what they want the solicitor's advice on.
The solicitor we used most recently (to do the conveyancing on my late mother's house) is also a friend - I used to see him on the train in the mornings and get a quick progress report. We've also used them for our wills.
If I wanted advice on divorce, I'd go elsewhere, possibly far enough away that I wouldn't bump into anyone I knew on my visits.
But there's one way to find out - ASK THEM!Signature removed for peace of mind1 -
What is the solicitor for, you've mentioned children but have given no context. In terms of the reasons why, it could be a multitude of reasons - recommendations from others, used them before, close to work (if signatures etc are needed) etc etcThrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time1 -
What else do you need to know?0

There is no work there and I don’t think they have been recommended…0

Could it be that my partner wants to take are 30 yo autistic child and move town?0

Is that what a FAMILY solicitor is for, as our child is in the mental health system?0
