Refurbished hoover out of warranty

I bought a refurbished hoover from Shark about 15 months ago. I found it a little clunky so I continued using my old hoover for a while. I started using the new hoover about two months ago as the old hoover started to show that it was worn e.g. suction was not as good.
Almost straight away I noticed an issue i.e. the Shark hoover would be ok for about two minutes and then it would switch itself off. Then I would leave it for ten minutes and then it would work again for two minutes and then switch itself off. That cycle would continue.
I called Shark straight away and I was informed the warranty was only for 12 months as it is a refurbished item - so basically tough luck.
I realise I probably should of at least tested it thoroughly once I received it. I have bought refurbished items in the past on occasions (never from Shark) and I have never had any problems. Is there anything I can do here. I think they sent me a faulty item rather than a refurbished item.

Yes, you can get it inspected at your cost and see if it's deemed to have a fault that was either there at purchase, or has arisen as a result of some form of inherent defect. Then you go back to the retailer asking whether they'd like to repair it, replace it or refund you.0

Assuming you bought a Shark Vacuum cleaner and not a Hoover vacuum cleaner.
90% off the time a vacuum cleaner cutting out is a blockage issue, so check filers are clean, nothing blocking the hoses or parts off the cleaner that air travels through, usley the motor cuts out to safeguard motor overheating and burning out and is due to an airflow restriction.
Even under guarantee a lot off manufacturers would charge the customer and rightly so too for not checking these simple customer maintenance procedures
Vacuum cleaner are designed to lift dust, grit, fluff, small particles and in some cleaners hair as well, anything bigger has the potential to cause it to clog0
