My PC died.

My pc which is just short off 7 years old died a couple of weeks ago while I was using it.

When turned on, all fans start, green light on motherboard comes on but only for a second or two, then there's a click and it dies, then tries to start again then dies, etc. The only way I can stop it is to unplug at the mains.

Is there anything I can do to test what's wrong (bare in mind I'm not confident in doing anything). Money is tight so I'd rather not buy a new one if there's something that can be fixed.

I'm using my old laptop which is on it's last legs (and I hate) so it's pretty painful lol.

Thanks

    I thanks for replying.

I had my pc build to my specs so all I can do is paste my order. I hope this is not against the rules.

    I have Windows 10 now.

No nothing. The screen went off a few seconds after the pc died.

Might this be the power supply?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I agree, crappy CORSAIR power supply.  Ideally swap with a spare to test the theory - know anybody with a spare?  Is the original PC builder still around (and local?).

You could try unplugging internal drives, removing the graphics board (if it's got inbuilt graphics to fall back to), etc. and seeing if it starts up as far as the BIOS.

Remove graphic card and use on road vga to eliminate one factor.

Also, remove cpu cooler, clean thermal paste and re-apply.
  • Well thank you all for your replies, some I have no idea what you are talking about!  :D
