What is normal electricity consumption?

Even given the large size of the property (2600 sq ft in old money) that electricity consumption is really excessive.I assume that being built / converted in 2017 all of the lights are LEDs? The Aga will be a factor and if the sales blurbs are to be believed its probably 5000-6000 kWH per year (although presumably by giving off heat its reducing the gas heating bill slightly hence why your gas bill seems reasonable for size of property). But that still leaves a lot unexplained. How easy it to turn the Aga off for say half a day? That way you could take meter readings on one day with it on over a 8 hour period and then another day turn it off and read meter over the same period. At least you get some sort of baseline as to how much the Aga is using. As a comparator we use around 4500kWh of electric and 18,000kWh Gas a year for a 2,150 sq ft (200 sq m) property but only 2 of us (although we are at home a lot of the day as no longer working and the kettle is on a lot 😅).1

Definitely going to be the Aga. Depending on the settings could be costing you about £200+ a month.Would advise taking regular reads but also a smart meter would be handy as you can see what’s being used & when.0

Eon predict circa 22,000 KWh elec usage pa (?).To answer your question, no that is not normal. In this post you'll see an extract from an Ofgem report looking at typical domestic energy usage. Only 5% of single-rate electricity consumers use more than 8200kWh/yr, yet E.ON are predicting that you'll use almost 3x that much. From the figures you quote, you're using 60kWh per day. That's huge, effectively boiling a 10A kettle continuously. You've bought more electricity from the grid in those six weeks than my 3-bed semi does in a year.

Some people think £80,000 a year income is normal. Others may think £20,000 is. Your electricity usage is up to you.-1

I think £20k is riches beyond the dreams of avarice. However, I do know how to read an electric meter and I submit my readings every month.0

conks said:HI,
We converted a barn back in Oct 2017.
It is well insulated and includes for a typical gas fired heating & water system, with mains electricity etc.
It's 4 bedroomed, 2 bathrooms, kitchen utility, playroom, study & Lounge. In total, for g/f & f/f the floor area is circa 250m2.
We're currently with EOn on a Fixed Online Exclusive V66 tariff - £17.75/KWh for elec.
I'm not overly worried about the gas as this (cost) is low however the electricity cost seems excessive.

This realises c£3,900 / pa for elec (& Eon forecast £600 pa for gas....). That's c£375/cpm.
The anomalies are likely to be an elec' Aga and 2 children with a host of devices (charging etc.). I also own an EV although rarely charge at home as there's provision at work.
To summarise:
• Does the consumption for electricity seem high.
• If electricity does appear high reflecting the home/set-up etc. how can we test this this, for example, would it pay to get in an energy expert/surveyor-of-sorts to see if there's a fault or issue, vampire draining and the like ?
• We are NOT on a Smart meter currently, would it pay to get one installed ?
Many thanks.Guessing your previous bill was perhaps an estimate? You have nearly 4 years of history there, assuming you have been reading the meters then you should know what your typical usage is?If lots of your previous bills have been estimates, and now a huge bill from a read, then they may make the assumption your usage is a lot higher. So I would be watching consumption for a few weeks (In case of bad meter), and if readings have been estimated for the past year (or more) then start doing regular submissions. After a month you could request your DD be reassed.Previous bills are needed to know for sure. If they were read and not estimated then I would be worried the meter is bad.Share the reading history with us.0 -
Try turning everything off that isn't in use like TV's DVD player, stereo's, charging leads, microwave ovens, games consoles, shower, surround sound system plus other items. There are only two things that require to be on 24/7 and that's the fridge and freezer, maybe the router for BB, but this would only use a few pounds per year.
If you were to ditch the Aga then that could seriously reduce the electric consumption but it would increase the gas usage.Someone please tell me what money is0 -
It’s the aga they are horrendous, I have an everhot and it costs £40 a month to run and I’m considering getting rid of it the aga consumes more than double that0
