I think something to do with crafting sounds great. When I was small I wasn't particularly into crafting at all but I can still remember someone gave me a small basket-weaving kit and I loved it, especially as we could use the small baskets afterwards.

As thegreenone has suggested, a box of crafting materials with card, glue, glitter, etc., is a great idea. Most children love that kind of thing. I also had a jewellery making kit and also made long ropes with French knitting, etc.

Or a nice book and pen set, so that she can start writing her own stories, rather than reading them. That's something many children enjoy too. I also was given a fountain pen at around that age. Loved it.

I was (and still am) an avid reader but preferred not to receive books as gifts, just as I never like to receive money or clothes. Far too mundane and ordinary, really. The library was my friend.

Oh and you can also get knitting kits for children. It's not as old fashioned as you may think because knitting's coming back into fashion now. . .  or embroidery kits, cross stitch kits, they're not too expensive and someone keen on crafting may enjoy them.

I think there are lots of things for that age group, it's a lovely age really. Hope you find something she likes - but I'm sure she will like whatever you decide to give her, as you are obviously someone who really thinks about what other people would like to receive.

       :)

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions... Some great ideas here., All much appreciated.  I have bought a kit to knit a bobble hat and have been researching baking kits too.  I have a kit from Hobbycraft to sew Christmas bunting which looks fun too.
  • A crochet hook, or 3, in  - 3,4 and 5 m, a learn to crochet type book - plenty in The Works, and a couple of balls of yarn from poundland,B and M etc

Believe it or not, crochet isnt just for the old - look at Tom Daley :)  One ball will make a head band with loads of mess ups and attempts. A few balls will make a scarf and gloves
