It's hard to speculate without reviewing the logs on the machine.

On the bright side, at least it is not looking likely to be a hardware problem.

In my experience, Toshibas are a bit rubbish - be prepared to use with external keyboard/mouse or for total failure.

Fair enough. But I've had two over the last 14 years or so and both have been great.
