...so if these are sometimes shipped with a 2-pin cable as well as a 3-pin one, presumably it's safe to use the 3-pin cable in a shaver socket provided I have a suitable adapter? (which is where I came in....)

Aren't they trying to do away with the 2-pin sockets these days... hence only having 3-pin / re-chargable options?
    No.

Just about every rechargeable Braun product still comes with a 2 pin plug.

    No.

    a) Because the item you purchased didn't have a 2-pin cable

    and

    b) There is no safe and 'legal'* adapter which allows a 3-pin (BS1363) plug to be used in a bathroom shaver socket.

(*it wouldn't be legal to sell such a thing in the UK, hence anyone who offers you one is knowingly breaking the law)

This is a rechargeable shaver - it should not be plugged into a bathroom shaver outlet !

The 3 pin plug goes into a normal 13 a socket.

    No.

As mentioned, the 3 pin plug is for convenience to charge the shaver outside of the bathroom. There is no "suitable" adapter that will convert a 3 pin uk plug for a shaver socket.

Another weird caveat is that because some 2-pin devices intended for use only in shaver sockets rely on there being an isolating transformer in the supply, you are not supposed to use said appliance in a normal 3-pin mains socket with an adaptor . .

I have a beard trimmer that came with a three pin plug. When it's running down a light flashes but it will easily complete the trim on the existing charge. It only takes a couple of hours to recharge so, if the worst comes to the worst, you won't be half shaven for too long.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Both my electric shavers have been rechargable and both came with a two pin plug... one also had a three pin but the other didnt. We've been told on this thread adaptors are bad and now that recharging shouldnt be done in the bathroom so what am I supposed to have done?

Also need to tell the likes of Philips as they have product shots of their docking station type recharging units next to a sink eg https://images.philips.com/is/image/PhilipsConsumer/S9987_55-U4P-global-001?$jpglarge$&wid=1920  on https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/S9987_55/shaver-series-9000-wet-and-dry-electric-shaver
