Indoor TV aerials advice

Hi all.

I want to change my living room around, but where I would like to place my TV is nowhere near where my TV aerial port is.

As there is no tidy way to put an extension cable in, as we have wood under floor heating, high open gable ceilings, and the cable would have to cross the opening to the kitchen or the hallway.

So was thinking the next option would be to use an indoor aerial instead

Wonder if anyone could advise

Is this a viable option?

Which is the best aerial to get.

I look forward to hearing you fab advise

Donna 😁

Indoor aerials are rarely a viable option, you would need to be very near to transmitter to have any chance of decent signal.
  • Any chance you could run a sculpted trunking to the new position? There are some brands that blend in so to speak. But all depends on the run.

I am no expert, but I've heard about wireless HDMI extenders and can imagine a Freeview box in the current location connected wirelessly to the TV in the new location.

To use an indoor aerial, you have to be in a strong signal area or the picture will break up or you might only get certain channels.

Also, even if you are in a strong signal area, you will probably have to position the aerial at a certain height and angle to get a good signal which can be inconvenient especially if your TV is as wide as the TV stand so there isn't much space for the aerial.

Can you run a new cable from the existing (rooftop?) aerial to wherever you want the TV?

What TV do you watch? Freeview perhaps.

Have you considered switching to Freesat or Sky?

Installing a satellite dish is not normally very expensive.

Alternatively you could look at internet based TV. That doesn't need a cable to the TV.

Finally, is there a power socket available where you want to place the TV?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

We have a cheap indoor aerial which does just a good a job as the proper aerials which are in the loft.  It isn't even set up, it is just lying on the shelf under the TV, no issues getting any channel.

A neighbour also has a similar aerial stuck to their attic window.

The caveat is we can see the transmitter from the street so no weak signal issues.

Indoor aerials are really hit and miss. You would have to try it and see.  When I lived in a flat with no access to the roof, I needed to use one.

A little aerial, placed on a high shelf, worked most of the time, except when the weather was wrong. In the wrong weather, the picture would break up.

I ended up using a full size aerial bolted to a high shelf. And even that needed tweaking from time to time. And it wasn't exactly pretty.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

One idea would be to hire a professional aerial installer to move the aerial socket to where you want it. That would be the most asthetically pleasing option as no trunking,etc..needed and it would use less electricity than using a wireless HDMI extender.

I've had an aerial connected by a verified installer. Very good and not very expensive.
They could also run the cable down to where you want it.
I've also drilled through a wall and run an extension behind curtains and around architraving successfully so you have several options.
