As a general rule cameras on phones are the first casualty in the budget department regardless of what phone you buy.

If your intention is to take "professional" photos or have more control/zoom/real zoom (as opposed to, a digital zoom you see on cameraphones) then a "proper" camera will usually win hands down every time.  The smartphone camera is brilliant for convenience but it will have limits, even if you spend four digits on it.

    Same applies for video.
  • As Neil said ...keen photographer means camera, phone is for phone calls and texts, oh and fakebook and twitting and whatsupdoc. Just when you think it's the ideal shot your phone vibrates, notifies you of your friends latest must eat dessert etc.

Often the phone is all you have with you so great take the shot, but keen then take your camera and lenses.

  • I have been looking over the new iPhone pics and they are excellent especially the macro.
Look at Mac Rumors or Flickr. Mac Rumors have a thread on iPhone 13 pics  and on Flickr you can filter the camera used to see what others are taking on many different mobiles.
I carry my phone now insured of a simple camera for the shots that look good when I am busy with the big lens. That is to say I use the iPhone to supplement my DSLR when out and about. It is not a 13 and has limitations.

    Are there any budget limitations?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Image quality available from phones is massively improved over a few years ago but I only use one very occasionally.  A camera is far more versatile and you can actually see what you are taking in bright light.  Something which is almost impossible on many phones.  Camera shake is far more of a problem on a phone too, both because of the way it is held and its light weight.

I'm another using a camera, but the pics I've seen taken with iphone do look good.

Not tried but Google Pixel 'phones were always rated as having decent cameras, and an older model, possibly refurbed,  I assume would be cheaper than lastest just in time for Christamas model

No doubt loads of reviews on Y Tube which cover the camera and not just what colour it is

To actually answer the OP's question, there would seem to be 3 main choices....The Samsung S21 Ultra, iPhone 13 and Google Pixel 6 Pro.
The choice of which would also bring other things into the equation, i.e operating system.
'Keen Photographer' also needs a bit more context, I'm a 'Keen Photographer', but, it's just for my own satisfaction with a few examples hanging on family walls. For that a flagship phone is perfectly good.
The OP might come back and let us know the level he wants to be at.

  • What is your budget?

If you are looking at phone camera; start with the Macro capability. If not at least 5 MP and with AutoFocus, keep looking.
Once you have that minimum standard, then you can look more closely at the other specs. For instance; if you want any kind of optical zoom, that will lower the options considerably.

If you are a keen photographer, you might want to take pics in RAW in addition to having optical zoom.
But without a stated budget, we are wasting our time.

Many thanks for the replies.  No specific budget.  Just wondering what sort of money for a half decent camera in the mobile and whether you can buy lenses for them eg zoom, Macro etc.
