We are a family of 5. We have a tv licence which allows any of the family to watch tv on their mobiles. My Son has started uni. Will my tv licence cover him to watch tv on his mobile in his student house.

Is anyone else in his house watching TV anyway? If this is the case they will need to get one anyway and he would be covered by that (assuming its one shared tenancy)1

Hi they are individual uni dorms0

In which case anyone coming to "check" would more than likely have to get through two separate locked doors to get into your sons room, assuming someone is stupid enough to let them in. Do with this information as you see fit.1

There is actually 3 locked doors lol. If they/security were to let them in, is he doing anything wrong.0

Ask the university, they will know.

Obviously if you have a tv in your room then you will need a tv licence.0

This may help
Do I need a licence to watch TV away from home? - TV Licensing ™
also this (see para starting with 'in limited...')
Students will need a licence for BBC iPlayer - TV Licensing ™
the key is that it must not be plugged into the mains ie it must be portable (a phone or tablet would be covered but not a TV)
Also, if your son 'moved out permanently' ie your address was not his home, then he would need his own licence.1 -
So as long as he is not charging the phone/laptop/ipad while he is watching tv he is covered under our licence.1
