Is there a debit card for kids with monthly limits?

My 14yr old son has started going out with friends, and cash is a PITA as he does not like carrying coins, and I rarely have any notes in the house these days anyway.
I've Googled for child debit cards, but not found anything - only child bank accounts.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to give him a card that has a monthly limit on it, eg £50, so he can get a meal with friends or buy himself something, but never exceed it.
Is there something?
My current account is with Barclays, but I could not see anything there.

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/cards-for-under-18s/ lists both bank accounts (which can't go overdrawn for kids, so should satisfy this requirement) and prepaid cards as an alternative, with a detailed comparison between the two approaches.

  • Rooster Charge Card -
Does anyone know, if you put money on a Rooster card using a credit card, is it counted as a cash transaction and therefore accrues the higher interest?
If so, I think this is an aspect which should be covered in the article above!
    TIA

You can get something specially designed for this and pay a fee or get something mainstream, with no fee, and load it with £50 each month.

Why wouldn't a bank account work? Transfer £50 a month should work in the same way and fee free. Should help him learn to budget.

Something like a Natwest Adept bank account which is free will be perfect and he will also be able to have his own Natwest login and access to the banking app to see how much money he has. 14 is the perfect age to start learning how to manage his own account and budget accordingly.

Is this because he belongs to a group of young people who believe in throwing away coins as not worth bothering with?

My child has an account with Nationwide.
It comes with a debit card which he has loaded onto his phone. He gets a monthly allowance which he has to manage himself.

I don't like carrying coins either and I'm all grown up.  Much rather have a card than a pocket of change.
