We got our marriage tax allowance but were immediately asked to pay it back?

You do not need to be a UK national to claim Marriage Transfer Allowance.
Have tyou tried claiming online?
https://www.gov.uk/apply-marriage-allowance
otherwise phone back and you get some one else who may be more knowledgeable
You could also try the webchat who are usually helpful.

I'm presuming your wife was present and made the claim, as only the person transferring their allowance can make an election
You have to be entitled to a personal allowance. This is where UK national comes in, althought it is not the ONLY criteria to be entitled to a personal allowance. If your spouse meets any of the tests contained within the following website link for each tax year you were claiming, then they would be entitled to an allowance and therefore be able to apply for the marriage allowance transfer.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride1 -
Thanks for the replies guys.
Its comforting to know that the UK nationals thing was a mistake and that we can apply, I also could not find it mentioned anywhere online and most probably she did get spooked by me mentioning visa - as not all visas are the the same and some of them dont allow work.
Ill wait and see how the change affected my next payslip and then most probably call again and talk with someone else who knows more than this lady.
And yes, my wife was present and she was the one that made the call and answered the security questions and then handed over the phone to me.0 -
RAS said:You are obviously not going to get this back-dated by four years if you only married in 2019.
But I think you need to go back and check that you can get it going forward and ask about back-dating until you marriage date.
2019-20,
2020-21
2021-22
Which does cover 4 tax years, although the backdate would only be needed for 3 years.
Although we remain in the dark about whether it can be claimed for the period before arrival in the UK.Signature removed for peace of mind1 -
Hi all,
So I thought I would give an update on this as I got my pay check and can see that for November my tax code was changed to denote marriage allowance.
I got a tax relief of £168 this month. I dont know whats the normal amount per month here, so I dont know if this was backdated and if done to which date??

The change in your coding will only affect the current year. You will be credited with tax overpaid from April up to November. You get 1/12 of the extra for each month. November onwards will be given each month until The end of the tax year. Any refund for previous years will be dealt with separately and may take a few weeks, depending on the current workload.0
