found this to be somewhat relevant.

0TYour Personal Allowance has been used up, or you’ve started a new job and your employer does not have the details they need to give you a tax code.

    thanks

Did you give the new employer your P45 ? OT is only used when the employer has not been given the relevant information by the employee.  Which box did you tick in the new starter form ?  You have either given them the wrong information or they have failed to use what they were given.  HMRC should pick up on this and issue a correct code in due course.  What does your on line tax account show ?
20 hrs a week is not relevant to whether you are taxed or not, it is a combination of earnings year to date and tax code that is the deciding factor.  If this is your only job the tax code in use is incorrect and will result in you being taxed on all earnings.  When it is corrected you will get any tax due refunding through your pay packet.

The tax figure quoted and the earnings level mentioned do not seem to agree with even a BR or 0T tax.  Of course this could be because you received extra pay in your first month.  There is also the possibility that there was an overlap of tax months.
The only way to do a proper check on your tax position is if you could provide figures.  If you wish to do so the figures needed would be from P45 or last payslip in old job.
    Taxable gross
    Tax
    Month number
    Tax code
    Any X after code.
May be two sets of figures if so only first needed.

    Then from first payslip
    Taxable gross
    Tax paid
    Tax code
    Taxable gross to date
    Tax paid to date
    Month number

Chase you ex employer for your P45. Then matters will self correct. Once your new employer processes it.

Yes - that looks like you are on the wrong tax code - you need this to be down as your only employment.  But you will get overpayments back!

It's not clear to me that the OP has a new employer. I read it as being that they reduced hours from 40 to 20 in the same employment (possibly different role, who knows) and still get taxed. No idea if the 24 hour job was with the same employer.
Is it wrong for taxpayers to expect this kind of thing to be sorted out within payslip to payslip timeperiods? HMRC is such a ridiculous shambles. Everything electronic (like payroll systems) should automatically sort stuff like this out. Instead people are robbed and have to wait ridiculous time periods to get the money back.

    @gozaimasu

this was my decision to leave 40 hours full time job to a new 20 hours per week job.
so change of employers and hours.

24 hrs job finished late Feb, redundancy.
so latest job is 3rd Employer during 2021.
    thanks

  • If you were on the emergency tax code (1257L) then no tax would have been deducted.

Tax code 0T is often used when someone hasn't complied with the new starter process (modern version of the P46).  This may be down to the individual or lack of understanding on the employers part.

Now you have been paid by your current employer this job should be known to HMRC so you could contact them and ask them to issue an updated tax code.  At the very least this is likely to allow you to earn £1,047 each month before tax is deducted.

You do seem to give information in little bits and pieces but you will do better with HMRC if you clearly explain your employment details for the current tax year so they can ensure your tax records are upto date and as accurate as possible tax code can be issued.
