  • why do you assume you don't get taxed if you only work 20 hours?

Think a little more info is needed!

Tax year runs April to March.  You'll be taxed on your earnings above the personal allowance in this period.

You've been working 40 hours though for at least part of this tax year so far. Any overpaid tax will automatically be adjusted for if you continue to work 20 hours.

so does it run from April 2021 to March 2022, then it could use April 2021 to 28/09/21 40 hours.

    thanks

Thank you. So from April until now we're you working 40 hours on approx £18500?

You can update your employment info online, you can input what you have earned so far and what you expect to earn for the rest of this year.  It could then create an adjustment. The tax office may still think you'll be earning 18k this year.
