Can Shell Energy use Smart Meters from which BG put in

I think my home must have been one of the first to have smart meters installed, along with a colourful energy usage monitor. We no longer had to submit readings.
A year or so later we switched to EDF, who told us the smart meters were incompatible with them, so we had to submit readings again. Our usage monitor stopped working.
When we switched back to BG, we were told that our electricity meter was no longer a smart meter but the gas meter was. So we had to submit electricity readings but not gas. The usage monitor worked for a little while after rejoining BG but then stopped communicating with the meter that had ceased to be smart, so it became useless. We unplugged it to save energy.
When we switched to Green, they were unable to read our smart meters so we once again had to submit readings..
We are now with Shell who have yet to tell us anything or even increase our DD. I assume they will need me to submit readings.
So all in all our smart meter experience has not been a positive one.0
