Can Shell Energy use Smart Meters from which BG put in

So a couple of years back, I had my Energy with British Gas and had a smart meter put in.
Then changed to Pure Planet, who were all so innovative and cool with their app only based system, but still needed med to use a torch and read the meter.
Of course pure planet are no more and now Shell will take over.

Just curious if Shell will be able to make use of the smart meter.

On a side note, I still feel it was beyond stupid that 100's of Millions have been spent forcing people to have smart meters, but then running system in such a botched way, that meters from one provider then fails to work properly on other providers system when switching.

    Yes, if:
    • It's a SMETS2 meter; or
    • It's a SMETS1 meter that has been adopted by the DCC.
If it's a SMETS1 meter that hasn't yet been adopted, Shell won't have access to it.
Post a photo of your meter (or a link to a photo of the same model of meter on the internet) and someone will be able to say whether Shelll will be able to use it.

It is worrying to think how many millions (billions?) were wasted installing totally pointless supposedly smart meters.

Which particular useless ones are you referring to? The not-yet-DCC-enrolled SMETS1 ones? The never-to-be-DCC-enrolled SMETS1 ones?
As of the June statistics there were 4.5 million smart meters "operating in traditional mode", ie. dumb. At a notional £200 each (for the meter and labour to fit it) that's £900M worth. A number of those will become smart again in due course, either because the customer switches to a supplier that is able to make use of the smart-ness or because the DCC will enroll them.

My smart meter installed by EOn worked perfectly with Pure Planet. It's the meter rather than the provider that was the issue above.

They have put back the time that SMETS 1 meters will be able to be read by all energy providers so many times that I am beginning to think that the SMETS 1 meter will never be able to be read by any provider than the provider that installed the meter.
I think they first said Sept 2018 then late 2019 then December 2020 then it's now late this year. Why not replace the SMETS 1 meters with SMETS 2 meters for those who want them.
Someone please tell me what money is

    You are mistaken.
There are people on the forum today with SMETS1 meters that have been enrolled in the DCC.

There is a ‘tool’ on this website that lets you check whether your SMETS1 meter has been enrolled and adopted by the DCC.

That particular meter is SMETS1, supposedly you can tell from the separate comms hub (the box with "Trilliant" on it):

    Just a general note:

All L&G smart meters are called E470. The particular model number is the one that starts ZCX.... (just below the display screen). That is the number you need to Google or look up on the L&G site to find the exact specification.

You can also find the year of manufacture from the meter serial number. This applies to any electric meter, smart or dumb. In the case above it is 2018, found in the number beginning Z18... just below the upper bar code. All meter serial number begin with one or two letters then 2 digits which denote the year of manufacture. You have to infer if the numbers in front are 19 or 20, but it is pretty obvious as there aren't any electric meters surviving from the early 1900s.
