ooh, i was going to suggest delia too! Its very similar to the one above but a bit simpler, no need to heat the wine first and uses fresh closed cap button mushrooms.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

I made a much cheaper version of beef stroganoff last night, using mince instead of steak. Not sure about authenticity, but it was very yummy.
- Cook spaghetti as per pack instructions, allowing about 75-100 g per person.
- Meanwhile fry mince with onions and mushrooms (I used about 500 g mince, 2 onions and a small punnet of mushrooms, and there was plenty for 5 people).
- Season with paprika, any herbs you like (I chucked in some rosemary and some chives). I also splashed in some Worcester and soy sauce for extra flavour. Crumbling in something like an OXO cube might also work well.
- When cooked, turn off the heat and stir in creme fraiche or sour cream (about 250 ml).
- Stir in the cooked spaghetti and serve (makes an interesting variation on spag bol!).
I think it would probably also work with rice, or even jacket potatoes.Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
Also got a cheaper (and much quicker!) version:
finely chop one onion and a handful of mushrooms, fry gently in butter/oil then remove from pan
heat pan up, slice a piece of steak into thin strips (I usually use a small piece of rump steak), sprinkle on some smoked paprika and fry. Remove this from the pan and add to onions/mushroom mix
stir a large spoonful of flour into the pan along with a large squeeze of tomato paste. Add either a tin of chopped tomatoes or approx 1/2 carton passatta.
Make up about 1/2 pint of beef stock (usually use oxo cube) with boiling water and gradully add to you get the consistency you like (I don't normally add all the stock but depends how much flour you've stirred in).
keep stirring till it boils (approx 2 mins) then add the meat and veg back to the pan to heat through. Stir through a couple of spoonfuls or cream/yoghurt or even full fat milk to make it creamy and serve with either rice or tagliatelle.

I used to cook a similar one to delia's method, but using brandy,
I used to brown off the beef, onion & mushrooms, season to taste with salt & pepper, leave to cook in juices, then when the beef is ready, add fresh cream, warm through and then serve with rice.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Hi all,
I've been looking for a recipe for stroganoff but every link I click on from google leads to a recipe with completely different ingredients to the previous one!
Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe they'd be willing to share?
Am hoping to make a job lot to freeze for my OH as I've recently found out he adores it
Following a rather successful attempt at making chilli to freeze I've started looking for other things I can put in all the empty takeaway cartons we have!

When I was a child I used to love my uncle making this (he was a chef) he showed me once how to make it and im sure it only had a few ingredients-
Fillet ,shallots ,mushroom ,cream and stock and im sure that was all.
I have never attempted making it tho ,he died when I was still a child ,always worried I would be very disappointed in my own efforts0 -
I've made it using an old Delia Smith recipe from her Cookery Course range of books for my Mum and Dad years ago, (I'm veggie but they said it was nice). I can't find the recipe online and the book is my mum's so I've not got it here but I've done a quick search and it's a bit like this recipe from what I can remember.

I think my mum has those Delia books so I'll have a look, otherwise that bbc recipe seems pretty simple.
