A good local fitter always seems to be the best advice, but lacking one of those I usual default to Tapi - Their generally "decent" on price and quality and have a good service. You will probably get a better deal with a good local, but if you want an "easy life"  then Tapi wins for me

I found a local carpet fitter through Facebook, just asked for recommendations in a local group. He did a good job and also offered a good price on carpet underlay, grippers etc.

And I ordered my carpet from Flooring Hut. There was a bit of a mixup with my order but it got resolved. Took a bit longer due to pandemic last year but everything was a bit slow back then. I got Cormar Ultra which I'm pretty happy with. The price was excellent, there was no way my carpet fitter or any local shop could match it. There's also 1% cashback on quidco.

I used Tapi Carpet, Carpet OK , not great but hassle free service and nice fitting. This was for the property I was selling however although there was no issue with service and fitting I was slightly disappointed with quality of carpet ( I will give them 4 star)
Which carpet did you buy from Tapi?

I looked at Tapi, but I noticed there was a lot of negative reviews on their Facebook page which put me off.

If you can find a fitter separately then you can buy the carpet online and save quite a bit.
Does this mean that local companies will add a premium on top of the cost price of the carpet?
I was quoted approx £20/m2 fully fitted which seems reasonable? Can companies quote without visiting the property - they just need measurements?

My local place (I live in the SW), where I bought the carpet, fit it for £50, room was about 11m2. They didn't come out to quote, just had the size of the carpet I was buying. Fitter brought the carpet with him so I didn't pay for delivery. Think I paid another £30 for them to dispose of the old one.

The carpet cost me £160. It was approx 15m2 and I got a 40% discount because it was the end of the roll. They had a huge selection of remnants.
Think the underlay was about £90.

When it comes to adding premiums, it depends on what you're pricing up.

I use a local firm for my carpets.  The price on the roll initially looks a bit high.  But that's the price you pay fitted by their own fitters.  The price includes new underlay and any gripper rods if needed.  They only charge extra for stairs.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Eek, as it happens I need stairs. How much extra we talking? Can't they do the stairs from an offcut from the other rooms? If you flattened the stairs and brought them up to first floor level then in theory the whole carpet size would cover at least one other room? You'd just be cutting one big long slit to go down the stairs and the other wider bit would go into the room.  Maybe I need to think about other ways to do the stairs by myself. Beige carpet needs exterminated.

When I said "premium" I meant mark-up on cost price. I suppose that's the extra price of a company that supplies and fits carpets as opposed to a carpet fitter who doesn't supply at all?

What's the price per square metre? The priced I was "approx quoted" I expect will have included the door bars and underlay but I expected them to not charge me for gripper rods. Of course your scam artists will try and charge you for all new even if they're fine. Maybe my underlay is fine too. I guess I'll get ripped off in the end :(

    Again, local people to fit.

I'm a bit of a fan of Cormar carpets.  We use it for clients a lot as it seems to be a crowd pleaser. Sensation seems to be a nice mix of quality and price.  We have Gemini in our bedroom, purchased from the Big Red Carpet company.

If you can find a fitter separately then you can buy the carpet online and save quite a bit.

Have you had any problems with the Cormar Gemini carpet?

Today, I read the flooring forum where someone said they've had problems with the Cormar Sensations 60oz carpet flattening and bobbling after 18 months. I'm wondering if that's an issue with all Cormar carpets.

Also, people say the backing on Cormar carpets is bad quality. Is that a concern?

    The backing?  Why would people
    have problem with the backing?

I've put Sensation in a £3.5 million rental house with a very picky tenant, an Air BnB in Chelsea and a family home in Edgbaston, all well over 18 months ago. I've put in much more expensive carpet that is hugely unreliable.  My good friend is also an interior designer as well
    and she swears by it.

Gemini is in my bedroom.  Had it for 12 months and I adore it. It's immaculate still.  It is a deep pile carpet though, if you're putting it in a really high wear area then you may well expect some flattening.  It's on the acceptable side of shag pile!

It's a well respected brand.  It's also a manmade product that doesn't feel man made and is very easy to clean.
