  • Hmmm, I wonder how this will work for us PV+battery systems.
The first step toward a different way of how we consume energy.

Octopus didn't allow anyone on an export tariff when they tested it earlier in the year.

Time of us reward system for all smart metered households.

It will obviously not suit everyone I mean with out ASHP we would have to turn it off for these 3 hours but then again for £6 a kWh we can fire up the multi fuel burner every day. Cook before 5pm,.not an issue for us and then watch TV on pre charged iPads til 8pm.

It really depends how they judge who gets paid what and I am guessing you can only make the cuts once as once you have reduced your usage you can't keep on going lower and lower.

£6 a kwh sounds like a headline figure,  I'm sure most of the time it will be far lower.

I wonder how it will work for those of us with smart meters that our suppliers can’t access.

Indeed. Otherwise it could work as an incentive to increase usage in advance.

I am not hopeful that anytime soon we see anything sensible from the majority of suppliers. Firstly the suppliers would have to sign up to the scheme and then come up with 'customer offers'.  Octopus will probably be first to offer something given their involvement with the trials, other suppliers probably wont be bothered given everything else going on and their customer service 'meltdowns'.

  • It was always coming, but rising prices have likely put the rocket boosters under the idea.

I still struggle to see why anyone is opposed to a smart meter. We have saved a few thousands since having them installed, charging our EV on a time of use tariff compared to filling up with petrol at out local garage. At half 10, the dishwasher and washing machine goes on, along with chargers for my power tools and anything else that can safely be left.

The wife has even done baking at midnight on the odd occasion she could not sleep.
