It may depend on how they do the checks. There are services which check the validity of passports and other forms of ID - we use one where I work as we frequently have to verify ID for clients. The system we use won't accept n expired passport or driving licence.

We have some discretion,  and where we can document what we checked and why, would probably go forward with a combination of other documents / copies etc. in most circumstances, but we are a fairly small business and so the business owners are available and can make the decision. In a larger organisation the manager or HR person doing the checks may have a lot less leeway to accept things which are not on the internal check list.

Since what the employer is doing is checking her right to work, then if she can provide document which show that she was born in the UK and is a British citizen then they should be OK, but ultimately only the employer can decide whether they are happy to proceed,.

She's contacted them. They will accept a current (not expired) passport OR driving license WITH birth certificate. They will keep the job open until the weekend after next. I have told her to look again at her student digs. Am not holding out much hope though.

You may be able to replace a lost driving licence PDQ: https://www.gov.uk/apply-online-to-replace-a-driving-licence

Obviously I don't know how long that will take, but it was fairly quick when DH had to do it because he'd lost his paper counterpart back in the day when you needed both in order to hire a car, and he'd decided to ignore the instruction to keep them together, and we realised just before going on holiday where we'd be hiring a car ...

  • And remember the Driving Licence should have correct address.
