Although an expired passport should be acceptable (as long as the photo is judged close enough to the current appearance of the holder) and "officially" is OK, some organisations want the extra certainty of a current document.1 -
It's definitely worth asking if such a recently expired passport can be accepted.
Or just show it and see if they notice. :-) they should, but ...

We've found the one that expired last year. We've now asked daughter to go in and ask what they will accept as an alternative to a current passport.0

This just shows the importance of putting important documents away safely, and I speak from personal experience. We put passports, remaining currency, MP3 players etc into a bumbag and that bag lives in a drawer with other holiday bits and pieces. I went to get them a few days prior to a holiday and the bumbag was empty. We have two, so I had put the wrong one away without checking. A couple of days of frantic searching followed before the correct bumbag was found, in the bottom of a carrier bag which was completely full of clothes hangers. Of course nobody had put it there!

I totally agree. It has been the subject of much of my frustration that I was answered inaccurately when I queried the whereabouts of the passport. However you can't tell teenagers. Mr S had also put the expired passports in 2 separate places! They have all now been gathered together, put in an appropriate container and in a safe place.0 -

I do not believe this is correct... if an employer accepts approved documents according to the list they can demonstrate due diligence has been followed and will not be prosecuted if the employee is not eligible top work in the UK.1 -

I'm struggling to believe that they will accept a current passport only. She could have had an expired one anyway, or never had one, or it be in the process of being renewed and not back yet.
I will update when she goes in and asks what alternative documentation they will allow instead.0 -

The Government's webite ( Does the worker have a current or expired passport showing that they are a British citizen? - Check if a document allows someone to work in the UK - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) ) shows that a British Citizen's expired passport is acceptable for the "right to work" checks. It is these checks which an employer would need to demonstrate having carried out to avoid prosecution.
I believe the above applies to the OP's daughter but a foreign national's expired passport would be a different thing.2
