I was I was a customer of People’s energy when they ceased trading. Although I was on a contract and had I changed I would have had to pay penalty charge. I’ve been assigned British Gas but in a higher tariff and standing charge than I was on epithet PE. Are BG able to select tariff irrespective of my earlier fixed contract tariff which will be substantially higher just as we enter the winter months.

  • People’s Energy has gone insolvent. Ofgem has appointed a Supplier of Last Resort: that is, British Gas. British Gas has agreed what is known as a deemed tariff with Ofgem which reflects, in part, the higher cost of energy since you took out your contract with People’s Energy. This tariff will be close to the Ofgem Cap and much cheaper than most fixed tariffs available on the market today. The alternative to the SoLR process is that your lights go out for three weeks whilst you transfer to a supplier of your choice.

Which, in most cases, won't be at a price anywhere close to the cap !

Your fixed tariff was with a company that has gone bust so it's no longer available. Much the same as guaranteed investments that are only as good as the company standing behind the guarantee. If your electricity contract is with a company setup with £100 and that's tens of millions in debt then it won't be something that can be enforced.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
