I've moved to a new house where the energy supplier went bust

Options
Hi everyone.

I've just moved into a house that was supplied by Pure Planet - they have gone bust and been taken over by Shell.

I contacted Pure Planet who said to register on their website, but I can't do that now they have gone bust.

I tried the comparison sites and the only energy suppliers I can sign up with are £100 over what we used to pay per month for a less insulated house, they are fixed contracts too.

What should I do?

Wait, do not under any circumstances register with a different provider or you will be on an expensive tariff and things will get messy when Shell complete the transfers from Pure Planet.
Make sure you have photos of the meter readings on the day you moved in.
Check who is shown as your supplier with your local DNO, when that changes to Shell, contact Shell to open your new account and do not pick a new tariff, just remain on their deemed, standard variable rate.

Wait to see what tariff you are offered under SoLR, then use that or SVT, whichever is cheaper.
As above, do not try to switch away until the transfer is complete.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The OP will not be part of the SoLR process as they were not a customer or ex-customer of the failed provider at the time.
Shell will become their deemed supplier though and the deemed tariff will comply with the Ofgem cap.

Does this depend on if they moved in before or after Pure Planet went bust (which is unclear to me from the OP) or is this the case because they had not registered as a customer with PP? My supicion is that it's the former?

Even if they did move in before the appointment of the SoLR, and so were on a deemed tariff with PP, it is academic, as without an account or the ability to create an account with PP their only option is to wait for the transfer of the supply to Shell and then engage with Shell to open an account.
It is different for those in the middle of switching as there is a 'paper-trail' of industry messaging and account creation, none of which exists for a deemed supply.
  • we moved in after Pure Planet went bust. I took a photo of the electric meter but the gas meter is just blank which is worrying!

The gas meter should wake up if you press a button, if not then yes it is a little concerning.

aha! there is a red button and a green one, they both seem to do the same thing. I get one display that says Meter Index, 01176. 179m3 and another that says Credit 0, Balance £0.
Is the first one the reading? My last meter was very analogue so it was easy to read.
