Anyone else not getting their OTP texts through in time to checkout?

I'm with FD and they have forced this horrid new mastercard on us.  Ever since, I keep trying to checkout in Tesco or Sainsburys and they keep telling me to request a OTP via text and it takes so long to come through that the time has expired and the payment does not get authenticated.  I have to ring up and wait ages (FD never used to have these long waiting times) and then they have to pass me over to another department and wait ages again before they manually let my payment through!
I am getting really really cheesed off.

I'd switch to a different bank, you can even get paid handsomely for it at the moment. Don't tolerate bad service if there are other options.
I've got accounts with 5 different banks and have never experienced what you have outlined

You could try fronting your card with the free Curve card. They also send the occasional confirmation cade but it arrives near instantly [on a WiFi connected phone].

If you google a bit, I believe there's a £15 account opening bonus for the Curve card.

Alternatively, use a different bank altogether. There are switch deals available, see over on the Bank Accounts board

There are a few banks that send a push notification in the app rather than a text message.

Tried to pay online with Chase (debit) card - said verify via app - 10 mins countdown timer - verification pop-up came through 30 mins later. Had to use my Barclaycard in the end.

Including First Direct, as it happens.

OP, do you have a smartphone (or a "phone", as the kids call them) and do you have the app installed? If so you can confirm the payment instantly through the app with a swipe of your fingerprint - without needing to wait for a text (which can take a variable amount of time to come through depending on the network in your area, not necessarily something which is within FD's control).

I bank with first direct, and approve my payments instantly in the app.

I also receive the texts within a minute or two.

I use my Chase card via the Curve card all the time. If there is a confirmation required at all, it arrives instantly in the Curve app.

I can't get the app because I don't have the right kind of phone (I have Windows)
