Three sim only end of contract forced into a new deal

As the title says, I was on a 12 month simo contract with three. The contract ended in July 2021.
So they've transferred me onto a rolling 30 day contract. Same data, mins, text, same contract.

However in September they've started sending letters to upgrade. I've ignored them because I'm not interested in an upgrade.

Today, I've received a text and an email congratulating me on my new three deal along with new T&Cs, etc.
The new deal is a 1 month rolling contract for £23 per month (vs £18 p/m previously)

When I asked three, they've said, it's because the old deal is no longer available...

I suspect it's because of the "Go Roam" changes, and now because they've forced me into a new deal after 1st of Oct, I'm no longer entitled to "Go Roam" after Mar 2022.

Has anyone been in this situation?

Surely, they can't be forcing people into a new deal?

  • Depends how you define "new deal". I'm sure that Three would consider it the same deal you originally signed up to, just with a price adjustment and amendments to T&C (as allowed for in the original T&C).

If you don't like the "new deal" then find a better one and switch.

Sure they didn't say something like "no need to contact us if you want the upgrade as it will automatically apply if you don't contact us by ???" or something similar

Yes, this is what they will have said, along with offering 24 month, 12 month and 30 day options.

Thing is, Go Roam aside, if OPs sim only is £18 a month they could (depending on existing tariff allowances) have probably saved a couple of quid a month by contacting Three and working something out, but here we are.

Take a look at ID mobile. They use the Three network but have some good deals running on a monthly basis.

    SMS received from Three today:

Good news, we've chosen you for one of our earlybird offers. Your plan doesn't end until 20/02/2022 but we're waiving your upgrade fee.  How about the 30GB SIM for just £15 a month for 12 months?  Or enjoy the unlimited data SIM for just £20 a month for 12 months.  Go big now.  Call 333 or chat 3.uk.  T&Cs apply.

How generous of Three to let me take a new plan 4 months early.  Of course it has nothing to do with getting my off my existing Advance plan that includes Go Roam onto a new plan that doesn't.  I'm guessing their plan will be to end all Go Roam contracts as soon as they can.
  • What's an "upgrade fee"?

Not even a particularly good deal, today's MSE newsletter has Three 100GB 12mth for effective £9/mth (albeit for "new" users).

Similar to the OP, I received notice today that 3 is booting me off my existing rolling unlimited everything plan for £16 in 30 days and forcing me to select a new plan which is more expensive and will cause me to lose Go Roam. The email says I have to select another unlimited plan and cannot select a lower data

I'm pretty unhappy because I spend more than a month each year in the US and Go Roam was the only reason I was with 3.
  • I feel your pain but it's not quite right to use terms like "forcing me" and "I have to select". You're out of the minimum term of your contract, if you don't like 3's proffer then find another one and walk.

I've noticed you posted similar comments in other threads about 3. It is an unhelpful nitpick that add nothing to this discussion, particularly when you are wrong, at least in my case.

It is entirely fair to describe 3's unilateral variation of my contract as forcing me off my existing plan and forcing me to select between a couple of options with are all both worse and more expensive. If I don't actively select one of the options, they will deem that I have selected the most expensive option.

If they're wrong, come back and show us that Three will allow you to do something other than the options they have given you.

The poster is right, you're not being forced to do anything (you can leave).
By not actively choosing an option, one has been selected for you - that isn't being forced.

You're blinded as you feel you're being disadvantaged by no longer having free roaming.  It was good while it lasted but it isn't coming back for the foreseeable future.  You were un-wise to put your head in the sand and hope Three would allow you to keep it.  Sooner or later, older contracts are replaced completely.
