You can indeed ask DVLA directly about the issuing of a registration plate. If it can be issued, they will usually then add it to a future auction (and will keep you informed as to when its coming up).andrew007007 said:Thank you for reading my post.
I have found a private registration plate that I have been chasing for years.
I have been told it needs to be applied for and put into an auction, then guy who is a broker can do this for me for a fee of £400 For his fees.
does anybody around on here whether I can apply for it myself so it can go into the auction? So to cut out the Middleman many thanks in advance.
Andrew.
That would be your cheapest option as i suspect thats all the broker is doing.0 -
Nobody has mentioned the price.Yes it *can possibly be bought at auction*or*it will be bought at auction* - Just a matter of how much you are willing to pay.Is it really worth it?0

Well thats the trick isnt it?Grey_Critic said:Nobody has mentioned the price.Yes it *can possibly be bought at auction*or*it will be bought at auction* - Just a matter of how much you are willing to pay.Is it really worth it?
It might be very personal / specific to the O/P and not worth anything to anyone else and the O/P could get a bargain
EDIT: Of the 1,000 registrations in the current DVLA auction approx 60% of them have a starting price of £500 or under. Approx 25% have a starting price of £250.
Of the 2,500 registrations in the previous DVLA auction over 40% sold for under £1,000. 20% of them sold for under £500.

Ok !!!
Many thanks for all your replies bar one - I will do whatever with my hard earned cash, so please get a life.
The broker is charging £400.
He said that he has to apply for it to go into a auction and estimates a hammer price of £150 - £200. Plus vat, auctioneers fee, and transfer fee and of course his fee.
I'm unsure where it currently is but many thanks for your replies and links.
Its been very helpful.
Kind regards

I've never done this, or any private number plate, but I understand that if the number sits with the DVLA then any member of the public can request that it goes to auction. I also understand, that in this case, the process to request a number is released is fairly straightforward and not time consuming.andrew007007 said:

In my view, a £400 fee is disproportionate for a £200 ish item.
It may be that the number is not being released from DVLA but another source - in which case the broker would seem to be doing more to earn the fee.
Where is the number being sourced from and what is the broker doing to earn the fee?0 -

On the main topic - what Grumpy_chap said... What exactly is the status of the number in question and what is the broker really offering to do?I need to think of something new here...0 -
So just to clarify, is he expecting to charge you around £400 for the plate, including his fees, etc.andrew007007 said:Ok !!!

OR is he expecting to bill you £400 plus "the hammer price of £150 - £200 plus vat, auctioneers fee, and transfer fee"0 -
It could enhance your life AND be an investment, which was the point that had been made that he gave his curt reply to. His original wording wasnt explicit, which was our point.NBLondon said:Manxman_in_exile said:Did you miss the "except" bit out of your earlier post?

Dipso has a real issue with how other people chose to spend their money - private registrations are a pet hate of his.0
