When I opened my amex nectar last year. I given them my nectar card number , so all the points went in there, now I'm coming up to year 2 and thinking of cancel the card.

Am I right in thinking the nectar card points I have saved are separate to the amex nectar credit card. I am only cancelling the credit card and all the points in nectar card are safe.

Cos I know for the amex membership point you have to use it or lose it when cancel amex cc.

  • yes the points you have on your nectar card are now yours even after you close the amex card down, i also have the same card and pay the yearly fee which i get back many many times over and pay the full balance off every month, great for council tax and car fuel

Yes it is a great card, anything over £2500 spend per year. You get the annual fee back. (£2500*2points*0.5%=£25 value of nectar points)

But at the same time, if I close it, I can restart the 2 years clock for the sign-up bonus.

I've just applied and been accepted :)

     great for council tax
Do you pay your council tax monthly on your Amex credit card? And it doesn't count as a cash payment? And you get nectar points? :open_mouth:

It does depend on the council - mine specifically exclude paying by Amex

Co-op doesn't let you pay bills (PayPoint) with Amex but sometimes the cashier will accept.
Either direct payment to the council (online/phone) or PayPal are more viable options.

If your council support paying by PayPoint, then you can pay in a Co-op Group store (not one run by a society, like Central England Co-operative or Midcounties) using Amex.

Councils normally either support PayPoint or PayZone - if its the latter then no dice.

The Co-op Group stores do not stop you from paying for PayPoint with Amex. The cashier has no cause to even look at your credit card any more, so I don't understand where you have got the idea that sometimes they might object. Just put your card in like any other.

I wouldn't try it at a society-run Co-op tho (ones which do not display the modern version of the 60s Co-op logo on their signage) as their tills are different, and in some cases they don't accept Amex at all.
  • Out of interest, and relating I think only to the A m ex nectar card, did anyone else get a letter from them about June saying they were putting the interest rate up in order to make it easier to repay? I can't find said letter now.
