I'm looking for a camera that I can position in a home to detect any motion BUT there is no access to a router in the property (I can easily set it up using my Wifi but its location there is no Wifi), does such a camera exist. Just want to record to SD card which I can view on a PC.

I assumed I could use just a Wifi camera and don't connect it to a router.

Does one such camera exist ?
Thanks

  • If you are not worried about the looks then something like a trail cam.

    Looks aren't an issue.
Thanks for the trail cam suggestion, hadn't considered it but it needs to be plugged into the mains though. Also needs to sit on its own stand if supplied.
  • Only mentioned it as I have one for the wildlife out back but it also has a 12v dc input. It also has a standard camera screw in mount underneath though I expect someone will know of one more suited.

It is a strange use case you are describing which is why your options will be limited, most cameras in the realm you are looking at are for security purposes and it really isn't a good idea for the footage to be stored on the camera. Anybody recorded on the camera can easily remove the SD card or camera to deny you access to the footage.

This is why remote storage is typical for security cameras but doesn't need wifi / internet - any NVR/DVR type camera system will work with the recorder placed in a discrete place in the house - this is the best option if you are using it for security..

I'm guessing it isn't for security because whoever you are recording is aware of the camera and happy with it recording them, so would have no reason to remove the footage?

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes I admit it is a strange use case. No its not for a security reason, I need to record events in a home but due to the the property not having broadband i cant make use of a camera that would enable me to view the footage on a mobile.

I used a dashcam with a USB power supply to continuously video a bird feeding station. Got a splendid movie of a Sparrow Hawk who takes small feeding birds for his lunch. A 'still' picture can be captured from the movie when playing the SD card in a laptop.

Are you looking for something covert or are you happy with an obvious camera being used?

Don't think it matters if it isn't covert.
