Phone on last legs. Which banks apps will be least and most problematic if not deregistered?

My phone is seriously damaged. It works but not reliably or for long. So I need to prioritise deregistering apps. Which banks apps would be most difficult to install on new phone if I don't unregister first from the previous device. Basically which banks apps cause most headache if you lose your phone?

  • Which banks are you with?

I reset my phone about six weeks ago, and had to set up from new HSBC, RBS, Natwest, Barclays, Coop, Nationwide, Santander, Halifax and Lloyds. None were that hard.

Get a new phone and if it’s Apple or Android, it’ll be easy to remove and move them over
  • When I got a new phone, the Nationwide app said the app would remain on my old phone but be deactivated if I hadn't used it in something like 14 months.

The First Direct app, on the other hand, insisted I had to deactivate on the old phone before setting up on the new one as I could only have the app running on one phone.

Other apps for smaller banks or building societies like Skipton, Metro Bank and Oak North seemed to transfer ok.  It was just First Direct that had the requirement to deactivate on the old phone first.
  • Can only speak for iOS… but in the last 2 months I’ve switched between 3 phones (wiping the previous ones as I went, but without even thinking about deregistering first)
in no case did I have any problem reinstalling a banking app that might have been related to lack of deregistering.
    (Lloyds rbs NatWest Barclays Amex)
BUT I did retain access to the same phone number throughout - even though sometimes on a different phone.

Most reinstall problems are down to lack of memory of various intermediate IDs or passwords, and some banks seem to make this very confusing,  make a secure note of account numbers, & sort codes 1st - those aren’t always on your bank cards. Also for some banks you’ll need a card reader to confirm things (generally the same one can be shared between banks)

First Direct is the most problematic.
The others are fairly straight forward
  • On iOS, I set up new banking apps when I got a new phone the other week and the only problematic bank was First Direct.  As I could not de-register the old app (due to phone stopping working), I had to phone them to allow the new phone to be registered (it was a very quick and easy phone call though).  All other banking apps that I use did not need de-registering.

Check with each bank if they allow more that one instance of the app (FD don't). Then install on your new phone before deleting from old phone

The Barclays app allows you to generate a code that you enter in the app on your new phone, so generate this code before uninstalling the app from the old phone

+1 for FD being difficult... it's the only banking app i needed to phone customer support to get working, and was the main reason i switched away from FD. The people on the phones for FD are first class though.

HSBC is a bit of a pallaver - mostly 'cos it took so long to email an activation code, then texted a mandatory 2nd code and timed me out when I was inputting it...

As others have already said, watch out for HSBC and First Direct (and M&S Bank).

Also possibly Barclays if you don’t have a physical PINSentry device at home to authorise the app registration with.

Lloyds Banking Group, Santander and most others don’t seem to be such a problem.

Thankfully I don't have FD or HSBC. I had FD but switched the account due to their constant app and keypad requirements.

I have Lloyds, Barclays and Nationwide which are important to me. I also have Santander, Tesco and TSB which aren't very important.

The SIM card will be the same and I have the physical card readers so it seems I should not need to rely on my old phone for anything then. I'm surprised because I definitely remember seeing options to deregister device in at least one of these apps and it wasn't FD or HSBC.
