Car hire in Canada-Toronto

Hi all,

Im thinking of hiring a car in Toronto in a few weeks time.

Ive read some information that suggests car insurance (as we know it in the UK) is an added extra in Canada. But Im struggling to find any details about it via the normal car hire booking sites.

Ive been through Kayak & Skyscanner, and deals are typically coming up at around £125 for 5 days hire for a small car. This seems surprisingly cheap and so I'm not sure whether Im missing something here.

Anyone rented a car in Canada / Toronto and can help here please? Are there any extra/added costs?

We hired a car in Toronto a couple of years back and there was no extra insurance to pay then. I took out the excess cover separately before I travelled

Information is still sketchy on this. I hired a car and the holding deposit was only $300. I was told that in the event of an accident the whole liability falls on the renter unless the collision damage waiver insurance is taken.

It is optional but without it it looks like I'm not insured. This seems to be backed up by information online.

With a holding deposit of just $300, it doesn't make sense as just excess protection like in Europe.

Articles seem to suggest that Canadian residents would have their own protection on their personal car insurance policies which covers rentals. Obviously as a UK person I don't think I have this.
