Virtual reality headset - help me to choose one please?

Options
I've never used one, never seen one, and know almost nothing about them BUT I read about them and really really want to buy myself one for Xmas.

I've had a scoot around Amazon but am none the wiser.

Basically I have two questions I need help with

(1) Which one should I buy to be compatible with my Galaxy A12.

(2) Once I have bought the headset what more do I need to buy to watch amazing stuff, and where do I buy it?

Many thanks to anyone who can help this old lady have the virtual time of her life!

  • Phone based VR is dead now, nobody really develops and sells such technology.

Samsung Gear VR from 2017 for example worked with the S6 to S9 models but won't with your A12 and it is no longer supported so you won't be able to do much with it anyway.

VR headsets are all about gaming and typically used with a Sony Playstation, Xbox or PC.
  • Thanks for the reply, Tallmansix.

I was under the impression that I could "virtually" walk on the fllor of the ocean, or the moon, or take a trip around the Milky Way or the pyramids. I am disappointed now.

I don't want to play games just experience wonderful sights.

    Google Cardboard
  • Eh? Google Cardboard

Google killed off Cardboard earlier this year https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/googles-vr-dreams-are-dead-google-cardboard-is-no-longer-for-sale/

Was quite good fun but really only worked well with high-end (preferably Google) phones.

Does it mean that it won't work for travelodger?

Think we may be confusing the OP's question about "What VR headset should I get?" with a discussion of Google's innovative use of a mobile phone to provide easy access to VR content (which is no longer supported, may not be what the OP is interested in using, and will (probably) not work with the OP's current mobile).

If you don't mind splashing the cash go for the Oculus Quest or Quest 2.

It is a standalone VR headset which has no wires so you have full freedom of movement.

The only thing you must have is a Facebook account and a phone is not required.

All games and experiences are purchased from the Oculus store via mobile app or the headset itself. There are a few freebies but the prices tend to vary from very reasonable to very expensive.

If you don't want the biggest and the best I'm sure there are a good few first generation ones available used.

Those were a lot of words. But what did you actually say?

I am not confused. Is there a reason Google Cardboard won't work?

    Perhaps you are confused.

Repeating parrot fashion something is no longer supported doesn't tell us whether it can work for the OP or not.

Windows 7 is no longer supported. Millions are still using it.

    I don't think I'm confused.

If you think that Google Cardboard may work for the OP then why don't you describe the steps that they would need to go through in order to use GC to "experience wonderful sights".
