It is not a fair assumption at all.  In the days of paper gift vouchers, some had expiry dates either on the front or back and others had no expiry dates.  As for using gift vouchers a.s.a.p, the whole point of vouchers is so the recipient can get what they want, when they want it.  That could be many months down the road.  The downside is that they can get stuck in a drawer and forgotten.

Paper vouchers, just a printed A4 sheet of paper, were yesterday's technology. They were easy to copy and fraud was rife. Barcoded plastic cards are vastly better.  For starters - no intrinsic value until loaded at the till and easy for sales staff to validate.

Or the retailer goes bust & they are worthless.
