Whst looking in the manual for my cooker for something, I just noticed that apparently the gas consumption for the small burner is 95.2 l/h, for the 2 medium ones it is 166 but the large one is a whopping 276!!
I have stopped using the large one. Every little helps, as they say.

But each burner is connected to a knob so you can turn the heat down. Yes, that big burner may well use 276l/h of gas when on full, but turn it down to a simmer, and the gas consumption will drop. It also helps to use the correct size saucepan for the burner, so don't use that little 4" pan on the biggest burner.

    Lol, that's true Freebear.
I do always use the right-size pan myself but sadly OH happily puts the small milk pan onto the large ring! All our pans have got burnt handles underneath.

7.08 kW per litre.  So the burners are  if usage is litres per hour
    95.2 x 7.08 = 674 kilo Watts
    166 = 1.175 Mega Watts
    and 276 = 1.954 Mega Watts
    per hour.
That's not actually possible is it? It'd certainly be a shocking discovery if true ;)

I suspect the ratings are grams per hour.  1kg of propane = 14.019 kWh.
So the burners are 1.33 kW, 2.32 kW and 3.87 kW input rated.

1.96 litres of liquid propane weighs a kilogram (1kg) if anyone wants to do any more numbers.

Smaller rings will just take longer to boil and cook stuff if full flame is needed.

My touring caravan burners are 1kW, 1.5kW and 2.5kW.  Gas consumption numbers are in g/h on some gas appliances, although the cooker just states the kW ratings.

Are you sure that it's not grams per hour
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

It's roughly 11kWh per cubic metre, and a cubic metre is a kilolitre, so 11 watt-hours per litre.
    • 95.2 x 11 = ~ 1000 W
    • 166 x 11 =  ~ 2000 W
    • 276 x 11 =  ~ 3000 W
That sounds a lot more reasonable.
Edit: I'm using the values for NG, if this really is for an LPG stove the outputs will be higher.

I assumed propane liquid.  Natural gas as gas? Good spot (I'd not seen it quoted that way until looking at a Hotpoint hob's manual today - they also give g/h for propane).

Mind as no-one bills for NG in litres (afaik) why is the OP concerned??

They do need to train their OH than flames must never, ever, lick around the edges of a pan, though!  It wastes energy and burns the pan handles. ;)

Yep, this is my kitchen pet hate (aside from sharp knives in the washing up bowl). My OH has resulted in me burning my hands on the plastic handles twice by doing this. There's four rings but she'll only use the big one!
