Make an appointment to see them face to face and take a list of all your questions before you go.
Squeeze details out of them as to exactly who they are waiting to pay out or receive money from etc.
And then agree a date for it all to be finalised or inform them you will be getting in touch with the ombudsman.
You might be able to agree a partial release of funds if they do not come up with any substantial creditor/claimant etc to argue against it.
The CAB also has good advice online on how to complain against too slow solicitors.0 -

My life is on hold and my solicitor on holiday. My mother passed 8 months ago. Her estate was cash only but because the house was left in trust for her husbands children I because she had the benefit of it whilst alive it was added to her estate taking it over the tax amount so had to go to HMRC then probate could be applied. My brother and I plus grandchildren are beneficiaries. The house has been sold and monies distributed to her husbands family. We are still waiting all desperately need the money most of which is in solicitors hands. I signed for the release of final funds from Nat West 6 weeks ago. I emailed my solicitor two weeks ago no reply phoned today to be told he is on holiday for 3 weeks! I am so depressed I can’t move on with my life and feel in limbo.0
