  • This is my feelings in a nutshell.

In the hallway we have a really unusual decorative terrazzo floor. The only other place I've seen similar, apart from the adjoining house, is a nearby hotel built in the same year.

Our neighbour hates it because it is freezing cold and has covered it up.

I think it looks beautiful and just wear slippers. But I just can't feel the same about the kitchen.

Think about how much heat escapes through your floor and do yourself a favour. While I'm not up for superglueing myself to the M25 to help the government pass more draconian legislation, I think everyone should consider the future, not simply the recent past. If feet aren't warm, the rest tends to need compensatory extra heat, which is wasteful.

  • Oh I agree where we can. We’ve insulated between the floor joists under the floorboards as it felt like a gale coming through when the wind was in the wrong direction.

Roof has been replaced and insulation up to regs now. Where we can, we will.

This is a current argument in our house! We uncovered the original quarry tiles in 2015 and it took a lot of hard work to get all the layers of tiles and adhesives off them.... roll on 2021 and I’ve just spent around £12k on a new kitchen. I absolutely love the kitchen but it just doesn’t look finished with the quarry tiles not to mention the fact that I HATE red.

The OH however point blank refuses to have anything covering them up. Even if I paid someone else to come in and lay a floor he said he’d send them away so for now I’m stuck with them.

Other than these I do appreciate original features and my house is quite traditional and not at all grey!

  • Lol, at least we both hate the tiles here. I feel you, I really do.

If we could just cover them up with something it would be fine. But just wouldn’t work alas. I think we’ve made up our mind to replace, although it will be a while yet as it’s a big job.

If the floor is past its best in terms of look, I don't see anything wrong with ripping it up. If your foundations are deep enough (along with the wallet), dig out the floor, put in a good thick layer of foamed glass, and top it off with limecrete. Put in pipes for UFH while you are at it. Finish it off with a flooring that you like. Even better if it is in keeping with the period/style of the house.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

If we can, we definitely will add insulation but not sure on the UFH as I get the impression it is better suited to newer houses? Also, budget is shoestring for a while yet  :(
