Back in the day, you could only watch TV (not record it) and that included sitting through the ads.

Then TV recording was introduced (VHS tape, PVRs etc) and the broadcasters started tearing their hair out because this allowed you to record a program and skip the ads when watching it.

Now we are back to the status quo - streaming prevents you (or can be set to prevent you) ad skipping.

I must say I thought it was a joke when someone posted on Twitter than you will have to pay £5 a month to fast forward through the adverts after twelve months.
I wonder how the advertisers will feel about this?

"Advertise to a market of millions (except for the ones that pay a fiver to skip your sad, contrived adverts)"

It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end....
