Painting skirting boards

Never had a problem and peeled them back before and just re-fitted it by hand, pushing the carpet towards the grips and then tucking it back over the top of them. Not had one ride up or not fit back the same after. They seem to settle after the initial stretching from fitting, so they aren't exactly under any real tension, as far as I can tell.
I'd rather take that chance than risk getting gloss drips in places or not managing to repaint all the skirting to the bottom, leaving it two tone.
Perhaps a carpet fitter will tell me otherwise?0
