Smart meters

Options
Recently switched to Eon fixed rate they have now advised me I must have smart meter fixed to stay on fixed rate or I will be moved to standard variable. I didn't realise it had a smart meter requirement.  Anyone any advice

Check your terms and conditions - certain deals and tariffs require you to agree to have a smart meter, others dont.

However, you will often find that you wont get on the cheaper deals (assuming that there are any left) unless you have a smart meter fitted - its in the T&C's for the tariff
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Very likely that those were the terms you agreed to.

What do you believe the downside to a smart meter to be?
  • Don't necessarily think there's a downside more a very poorly person in house who must be shielded so we tend to live in a bubble
  • All E.on fixed tariffs have had a smart meter requirement for years now.

Maybe try telling EON that, they might stop hassling you to install one.

    In Progress!!!
  • Explained to them about DH they said they would transfer account to standard variable.

I didn't say never I said not at the moment

    thanks for everyone's help

  • Another (slightly sneaky) approach would be to accept their kind offer of a Smart Mater, but each time they arrange a fitting date tell them its not convenient.  I'm pretty sure you'l be able to drag that process out for a year or 2.

I did that with EDF 2 years ago.

I bought 1080 Andrex supreme bog rolls (for £35) and stored in the hallway and under the stairs and had nowhere to move them to for the workmen to install the meters. Therefore, about a week before each appointment, I called them to reschedule.

Did that for 9 months until about end Feb 2019 when they wouldn't allow me to reschedule. About 4 days before the appointment, covid saved me and I eventually switched to shell which didn't require a smartmeter.
