Yes I've spoken to a couple but obviously given the wish of "privacy" from the flats there is dispute over how much can come off.

You can cut off any parts that are over your boundary.

Do you mean your neighbours wish for privacy from the flats?

Your neighbours can't expect you to provide a "shield" in your garden to protect their privacy.  If they want a "shield" between their house and the flats - they'll have to plant a tree in their own garden.

I appreciate that you would want to avoid a confrontation with your neighbours - but you need to bear in mind that it seems to be them who are making an unreasonable request.

The trees are very tall so I have to cut quite a lot and now branches are falling into my garden so maybe I'll go through the garden hedge legislation as well as getting tree surgeons into cut them back.

  • This neighbour of yours has cut their side for space and left the other side of their tree to shelter them. How generous of them 😎. Hope they don't ruin your fence.

I see your point now. If you want it cut I think you will have to pay for it yourselves.

In reply to those asking how high I'm attaching a pic taken from the top of an old victorian house. The flats that are dwarfed are 3 stories. After telling me that they were going to cut the trees they cut the branches their side to allow light but left my side.
Yikes! Those are HUGE! I would cut what you can on your side for now using a ladder and an extended cutter thing.

A tree surgeon will cost you over £1000 I think (my neighbour had theirs done and it was a lengthy and expensive process) so if there is another route I'd look for it!!

Could you hire one of those cherry picker things?!?!? That would be fun!!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Zooming in and looking at the fence.... Wow! The neighbours are really taking the proverbial.

And moving the fence! That's your land, he can't keep moving the fence 6in as and when he likes.

Cut them back to the boundary so you don't have to keep cutting too often.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I have picture of before and after the fence was put up and it's just ridiculous.

Cut them back on your side, lob the bits over the fence. Thread over, surely?

Do you know where the boundary actually is?  The fence may or may not have started off on it.

  • Are some of the trees branches on the land owned by the flats at the back?

Really? The OP may need a tree surgeon with a cherry picker and access for it. An  alternative might be a scaffold tower. Otherwise, how is the person doing the cutting to get up there without trespassing on the neighbour's land? They won't do that unless they're bodgers; the insurance risk would be too great.
