    Well, they definitely ain't leylandii.

They're trees. Proper trees. And they've been there a long while, since before you moved in.

If you want to trim the branches on your side, feel free. But you do need to offer the arisings to the tree's owner.

Yep I think they were planted in the 60s.
An additional problem I have with these trees is that they pushed against the fence and I asked the neighbours to cut them but he just moved the fence a little further on to my land.

If you hate them so much, why did you buy that house, given they clearly predate your occupation...?

Those trees are going to need tree surgeons, with all their 'gear', these things look beyond the scope of telescopic pruners etc. etc. used by homeowners.

They weren't that big when I bought. These are fast growing trees that were kept under control until the owner got sick and then sold.

Yes I've spoken to a couple but obviously given the wish of "privacy" from the flats there is dispute over how much can come off.

If they are that old and not leylandii are you sure there's no preservation order on them??  That will make things a bit trickier.

They cut the branches on their side (because they blocked light) so now  the trees are a little lopsided hence the pressure on the fence.

Have a look at the high hedge legislation - that's one option to force a reduction in the height.
The overgrowth on your side of the fence will be down to you to cut back.
