Thank you for the link. These are my results. Can i get fast broadband packages of around 60mb?

With that there's no reason why you couldn't achieve near the max from a VDSL package, ie, near 80Mb/s. You must be pretty close to the cabinet. My stats are slightly lower but I'm connecting at 78/20 with Now Broadband Super Fibre (63Mbps) plan. all you need is to get the master socket sorted and line up and running.

Thanks for that. Hopefully the engineer sorts the line out so then i can get the quicker package.

Also any idea why half my neighbors can get fast speeds and the other half cant? Surely all there lines are not faulty.
  • You seem to have looked ar a copper (ADSL) service from Shell. You may be able to get it a bit faster than the quote depending upon your distance from the exchange.

    As mentioned above by neilmcl..
Your neighbours are probably on VDSL (fibre to the cabinet) as shown at the top of your post picture. It is available to you and to get thise speeds you need to ask for a fibre to the cabinet (Fttc) service i.e. VDSL.

Shell just use the service provided by Openreach and virtually all other retail suppliers will get the same speed as (unless your supplier limits it) that is the best Openreach can provide on ADSL and from your posted picture that will be 15Mb/s and that equates to the 10Mb/s Shell say they will give you. They will not guarantee 15 though you may well get very close to it.

Apart from customer service (which you might well value and there are big differences between suppliers) just pick the package that suits you for facilities, speed and cost. There will be no real difference technically in the signal you get from the exchange.......except for the best ADSL type (all now considered slow by many users) available and VDSL (Fttc being fast but not the fastest available to some. At present you cannot get the absolute fastest service fibre to the premises (Fttp) i.e. all the way!
  • Speeds locally? Some on fibre others on copper.
The engineer can only sort any issues affecting speed to approach the max of the system (copper or fibre). He/she will not make the big jump from 15 to 60+. That depends upon which package you buy.

But no provider including Shell is offering the faster speeds to me when I do there availability checker.

This applies to all the companies I have tried, Sky, EE, plusnet, Vodafone, etc

On there websites when I put my address in, the quickest they offer is around 12mb.

But when I put my neighbor in they can get 60mb+.

But if I put someone else a few doors down there also like me, only slow speeds available.

    So another update on this.

The only provider I have found who can offer fast broadband is SSE. When I enter my address on there website, i can get speeds of up to 76mb.

    Also i have spoken to Talktalk who gave the following reason for not offering fibre;

Faster Fibre is available but due to high demand in your area we are unable to offer it to you right now. We recommend taking one of our unlimited broadband packages and upgrading to fibre when it becomes available in your area.

All service providers are allocated a fixed number of Fibre lines. At the moment, all TalkTalk lines are all occupied. Once Fibre is available, you would be notified.

Is that correct? Do service providers get allocated a certain amount of fibre lines?

Yes, and this will explain why some of your neighbours are getting speed estimates above 60mbps and others only 10mbps, there is a finite number of available spaces for vdsl on the cabinet. It's fairly rare but it does happen.

Interesting, looks like I'll go with SSE then who are able to offer me super fast broadband.

So I have gone ahead with SSE fibre broadband. The engineer is coming out in a couple of weeks .

It's not the cheapest but it was my only option for fibre.

Let's hope they stick to there word and offer me high speed fibre broadband!
