I learned basic crochet from YouTube. And American bloke called Mikey. So easy to follow and Ive even done a doily I am so proud of. Ive taught a couple of others with my limited knowledge too.
Ive also learned a lot of basic DIY skill and bits of simple woodwork.
My moneysaving one to date was how to fix my upstairs toilet which made an awful noise when filling. Saved a fortune on a plumber.
There is so much information on YT that you can learn virtually anything these days.

I've taken quite a few courses on Udemy; some paid and some free. The prices vary wildly from week to week and you should never pay full price. Once on the mailing list, sales come up every couple of weeks with many courses typically reduced to £15.99 or better. A couple of times a year - Black Friday week being one - most courses sell for £9.99.
A useful resource for finding free courses is the hotukdeals site which can flag up when online courses are reduced or temporarily free and send email alerts to you

Oh yes lots ranging from fixing a leaking toilet cistern, clean an overheating laptop, bone a turkey/chicken and to how to bone and separate a leg of lamb/venison into various joints. The last one is probably my favourite.1

I learned how to make bandsaw boxes 5 years ago just by watching online videos. Then started to buy equipment, wood and other tools to do the job. Spent a lot by selling camera equipment, which was the earlier hobby, but it turned out to be a lovely hobby. Not a money maker, but sold a lot to replace the wood I was using. Now I am 80, have slowed down and guess I will eventually be selling off my equipment, Anyone can do it if you have time and are prepared to study to learn the craft. I should have started earlier. www.badgerwoodcrafters.co.ukI'm a retired IFA who specialised for many years in Inheritance Tax, Wills and Trusts. I've always been able to knit straight lines (made handbags and blankets) but nothing else.
Thanks to YouTube as of a few months ago I can now knit Christmas trees, stockings and hearts lol.
I now know how to add a stitch and drop a stitch on purpose instead of by accident 😂🙈
I did try to learn to crochet a few weeks ago but my wool is too thick and keeps splitting so need to get better wool.for that.
I've also learnt through YouTube how to replace toilet seats, and many manynitber DIY things around the house. Aswell as how to grow and take care of tomato plants.Pay all debt off by Christmas 2025 £815.45/£3,000£1 a day challenge 2025 - £180/£730 Declutter a bag a week in 2025 11/52Lose 25lb - 10/25lbs Read 1 book per week - 5/52Pay off credit card debt 18%/100%0 -
Youtube usually provides the answer to anything tech-y for me (unless the internet is down, of course). No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.1 -
@Grumpysally, I can't find the one I used, but this one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfTWgMTqGqY&list=PL7nysDkNnZHelZpSk9Xi0YyztSUKgC4GA - is pretty much the same, although the automatically-generated subtitles made me laugh out loud in places!Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)1

Has anyone tried any of the Domestika courses? I keep seeing them advertised on FB?

@SeniorSamyour boxes are just beautiful and seem very well priced (read: I don't know how you make a profit!)
I've learnt a lot of sewing skills on YouTube but my favourite skill acquired was replacing an oven heating element. I managed to persuade my husband we should give it a try and we repaired the oven in our old place for £10 (the part) rather than calling someone out or, worse, buying a new oven.

I learned how to tie a wedding bouquet and buttonholes for my own wedding, then a different style for my step daughter's wedding. I made the bride's bouquet, 4 smaller ones for the bridesmaids, 30 buttonholes and 12 table decorations for less than £80.
