We've had a Beko for 6 or 7 years and no problems. (Famous last words)

  • Does your noisy Hotpoint have the motor on top of the drum or hanging below it? If the motor is at the top then the bearings can be replaced, if below they can't. However even if they can be replaced and you can find someone willing and able to do it, it may not be worth it on an old machine.

Of modern machines Ebac bearings are replaceable, Miele are not, I don't know about others.
Old machine is not noisy but drum is difficult to turn.  Machine is Hotpoint Aquarius WD640 1400 spin, not taken apart yet so don't know layout inside.

If it's just stiff to turn the first thing to do is take the belt off and see which is stiff, the drum or the motor. If it's the drum it can't be repaired and it's not worth replacing, if it's the motor then it's easy to replace but probably expensive.

Motor is below drum but disconnected belt and it is the drum which is stiff to turn.  Although the drum housing is plastic it is interesting to note that it is in two half and could possibbly by taken apart.

Personally, I look for the simplest one - actually quite difficult these days.

Will you ever use all of the 28 different programs it's got?  Of course not.

You've got your 30 or 40 degree standard wash that you use every day, 60 degrees for dirtier stuff, 90 degrees once in a blue moon.  That's about it really.

A high spin speed is good - reduces drying time.  Other than that, my motto is just to go for the simplest.  More options = more complexity = more stuff to go wrong :-)
    This is really sound advice.

We generally use the same wash for everything on ours - 30°, perhaps 40° for slightly dirtier stuff.
Ours has an "intensive wash" option, which just washes it for longer.  1400 spin.
It's an LG as I liked the look of the big door on the front (the actual door isn't that big) - that was purely it.

People will rate Miele but within 10 years, washing machines will be much more efficient so I'd also think about a timeline of when you may replace it and budget accordingly.

Prices may also be slightly higher at the moment as many shops will put their prices up now, only to drop them to normal levels for Black Friday events.

OK, it's a later one, they were just coming out when I retired. Yes the drum is in two halves but it's not designed to be repaired.

How about Samsung any idea if they are sealed drum?  Failing that it looks like it is either Ebac or Ebac.

    Edit: What about Haier?

    Edit2:
Just had a look at Ebac's website and unfortunately they don't even have a proper phone number available, only an 0345 high charge number, that isn't a good start for their quality of customer service.
  • Ok so narrowed it down a bit and at the moment I am considering either:
    • Samsung Series 6 WW80T684DLH - 8Kg, 1400spin, with Auto Dose, £600
    • EBac AWM8D2-WH - 8kg, 1600spin, £500
Any thoughts on whether the Auto Dose (detergent) feature on certtain Samsung models i works well? I assume it measures the weight of the washing and dispenses the correct amount of detergent to suit the load?  Is it worth buying the Samsung for the AutoDose feature or the Ebac for the 1600rpm spin?

I've a LG as my current washing machine, I got it for a couple of reasons.. it looked good, had a big drum so I could wash duvets, it had a 5 year warranty and a 10 year warranty on the drive (direct drive), I also knew someone who worked in a big electronic brand store who said the only washing machines that never come back with issues was LG and price which was £410.

7 years later it's still going good and is quiet, my only complaint is when it starts it's sounds like it's sucking the water out the pipes and u can hear them clanging all round the house.😆
  • Had a samsung adwash couple of years back. Bearings went inside 18 months. So swapped back to LG. Our last LG went on for 10 years. The washer is on everyday,  so plenty of use.
